The Made-in-the-USA Story that Wasn’t Being Told

CHANNELLOCK® has been manufacturing professional-grade pliers and hand tools since 1886. Trusted by plumbers, electricians, linemen, and HVAC technicians, the brand’s signature blue-handled tools are built to last. But despite a loyal following among seasoned tradespeople, the company faces tough competition from imported products that easily undercut on price.

The Challenge

In the trades, brand trust travels fast. Pros who commit to a brand bring DIYers along with them, which makes earning the Pro’s trust the single most important battle in the hand tool category.

Our research made the path to winning that trust clear: 60% of hand tool buyers prefer Made-in-USA products, yet only 13% of tools on the market actually are. CHANNELLOCK® had a century of American manufacturing behind it and the most defensible Made-in-USA position in the category. But what we found told a different story: pros and DIYers alike were associating that distinction with at least four largely imported brands more than the brand that had actually earned it.

The Solution

We went deep into the trades pro ecosystem to understand not just what professionals buy, but what they believe. That research surfaced a high-value segment we called the “Veteran Victor”: hardworking, patriotic tradespeople who see American-made as a mark of quality, not just a label, and are unequivocally willing to pay more for it. We built the entire strategy around what this pro values most:

New Brand Packaging

Introduced a new, cleaner package design that prominently featured the Made-in-USA story and put it in front of every shopper in the aisle.

Community Partnerships

Aligned the brand with veteran organizations and trade school programs to meet the prime prospect where their values live.

Multi-Channel Campaign

Featured real CHANNELLOCK® factory workers, giving tradespeople a direct connection to the Americans building their tools.

The Results

The strategy delivered double-digit sales growth in under two years. Aided awareness of CHANNELLOCK® as an American-made brand jumped from 39% to 62%, and the signature blue tools became more synonymous with “Made in USA” among the professionals who matter most.

Conclusion

In the trades, authenticity isn’t optional. CHANNELLOCK® had a compelling story; they just needed a strategy built on a true understanding of the pro to tell it effectively. When you know what your prime prospect believes, you stop competing on price and start winning on principle.
